For Flagship A (Johor Bahru City Centre), the key economic activities are financial，cultural, and urban tourism. Coming soon, under the Johor Bahru Transformation Programme, will be the rehabilitation of Sungai Segget, w hich will give JB some measure of pride, just as the Sungai Melaka rehabilitation project did for Melaka City. Projects that will be completed this year in Flagship A are the hotel chain, Double Tree by Hilton, and Johor Bahru City Centre (Komtar). Yes, JB also has a Komtar, and the commercial building will be an attraction to shoppers once more, with new tenants reportedly coming in.
For Flagship B (Nusajaya) the key economic activities include education, healthcare, creative industries, and biotechnology. In EdllCity, an education hub in Nusajaya, universities like Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, Marlborough College, University of Southamp ton Malaysia, and University of Reading Malaysia are already now operating and delivering their programmes. Yes, those are real uriiversities in a real place. Flagship B also offers Legoland Malaysia and Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, which have been opened to the public since 2012. Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, a major British film and TV studio, has also started its operation. It is perhaps only a matter of time before the likes of Daniel Craig, Angelina Jolie, or even Aamir Khan will shoot movies there.
Flagship C is also known as the Western Gate Development, as it is located in the western part of the region. Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas is one of the world’s major container ports, with several key economic activities such as logistics, free zone industrial area, regional distribution and international procurement, and oil storage terminals. The Tanjung Bin petrochemical and maritime industrial hub is expected to complete its second phase in 2015.
In Flagship D (Eastern Gate Development), we already have the Pasir Gudang manufacturing and logistics hub, as well as growing townships such as Bandar Seri Alam, which also offers education facilities such as Asian Metropolitan University, University of Kuala Lumpur, and Universiti Teknologi MARA.
And lastly, in Flagship E (Senai-Skudai), we already have the Senai International Airport and Johor Premium Outlets, a luxury brand shopping village which is one of the catalytic projects that started in this zone.It is important to note that this is just a partial list of development updates. Thus far, most of the development milestones that they have set have been met一a good indication for investors, property or otherwise.
“Iskandar Malaysia recorded a total cumulative committed investment of RM 131.64 billion from 2006 until 31st December 2013，” comments Ismail. “Of the total cumulative committed investments, RM 56.32 billion or 43% represents investments that have been realised as projects on the ground. Of the total cumulative committed investments, 64% (RM 84.62 billion) are domestic investments while 36% (RM 47.02 billion) came from foreign investors.”
